Swatch put actual gold in a MoonSwatch. Naturally, the queue has gone digital. The Mission to the Moon 1969 is the most serious — and still somehow most Swatch — MoonSwatch yet: an 11-gram Moonshine Gold detail package, a quartz heart, and an application process that turns buying plastic-adjacent fun into a small exercise in lunar bureaucracy.

Here’s the part that actually earns the hype: the dial, hands, crown, and pushers are 18K Moonshine Gold, and Swatch didn’t just source new bullion for the occasion. They melted down vintage Omega spare parts dating back to 1969 and recast them in-house, so the gold on this thing is Omega’s own history, physically reworked onto a $570 watch. The price itself is a bit, too — it’s set at what 11 grams of gold cost in 1969 (about CHF 48), not what it’s worth today (closer to double the retail price). The design leans hard into the tribute: a vertical satin dial, a black Bioceramic bezel with a gold-toned tachymeter, gold beveled indexes with black lacquer, and period-correct OMEGA typography lifted straight from the 1969 gold Speedmaster.

And then there’s the part that makes this a genuine departure from every MoonSwatch before it: you can’t just walk into a boutique and buy one. Limited to 1,969 individually numbered pieces, available only through an online application process. Update, July 27: the odds turned out to be brutal — about 0.16%, roughly 1.2 million applications worldwide chasing those 1,969 pieces, per Florence Vuichard’s reporting for CH Media.

My honest take

Every previous MoonSwatch was, materially speaking, pure plastic wearing a Speedmaster costume — fun, clever, but nothing you’d call precious. This one is different. Eleven grams of real gold, melted from Omega’s own vintage parts, priced under what the metal alone is worth, on a $570 watch. That’s not a marketing angle, that’s an actual value proposition, and it’s rare enough in this hobby that I think it’s genuinely worth applying for. I’d buy this one — would you do the same?
